The Japanese Choral Society of Washington was formed in the spring of 2001, under the directorship of Ms. Kimiko Shimada, a member of the Niki-Kai Opera Company of Japan with degrees in opera studies from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and the National Verdi Conservatory in Milan, Italy. The Society's musical repertoire includes traditional and modern melodies of Japan performed in dramatic and striking choral arrangements. Members of the Society are residents of the Greater Washington, DC area; graduate students, spouses and professionals from local Japanese businesses, universities, media, government organizations, as well as national and international agencies such as the NIH and the World Bank.
