As a composer, arranger and accompanist, Maiko Chiba supports the
Japanese Choral Society of Washington from multiple directions. She
has arranged the national anthem of Japan, "Kimigayo," and the "America the Beautiful" exclusively for the group. The re-arranged
"Kimigayo" has been performed by the group since 2007 mainly at the
National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C. The newly
re-arranged "America the Beautiful" was performed at the Kennedy
Center's Millennium Stage by the group in April 2008 and will be
performed again at the group's joint concert at the American
University in Washington D.C. in May 2008.
Maiko Chiba holds her Bachelor's degree in composition from the Tokyo
National University of Fine Arts and Music and her Master's and
doctoral degrees from the University of Maryland's School of Music.
Her flexibility of expressing musical arts shows her compositions for
a wide range of needs - from a single instrument up to a full
orchestra, with genres ranging from classical to modern age. One of
her compositions "~ On a Field of Wintry Glass ~ for violin, cello,
and piano" was highly praised by the Washington Post in 2000. Ms.
Chiba also has composed for numerous TV documentary programs for NHK
(Japanese National Broadcasting company). One of her series of musical
compositions received the HDTV Program Award by NHK in 2001.
Her awards include: a first prize from the Walsum competition from the
University of Maryland's School of Music, a Special Commendation from
the Vienna Modern Masters Orchestral Recording Award (Austria), the
Ataka award from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music
(Japan) and the Washington Award by the S&R foundation (USA).
Maiko Chiba is currently a member of the American Composer's Forum,
the Society of Composers, Inc., and BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.). Her
piece for violin and piano is scheduled to be performed in the mansion
at Strathmore in Maryland in September 2008.
